How it works

Ultra-Trail Grizedale Launches a Unique Two-Day Trail Running Challenge in the Heart of Grizedale Forest

Trail runners from across the UK are set to descend on the Lake District in June 2026 for the Ultra-Trail Grizedale, an innovative two-day endurance event that blends classic ultra-running with a fresh competitive twist. Based out of Grizedale Campsite and set amid the sweeping woodland, forest trails and panoramic views of Grizedale Forest, the event promises a weekend of grit, camaraderie and breathtaking scenery.

A Two-Race Weekend Like No Other

The Ultra-Trail Grizedale challenges participants to take on two races across one epic weekend, where competitors choose to run solo, in a pair or as a team of 3, 4 or 5.

Day 1 – Saturday: The Grizedale Forest Ultra 7km Loop

Start Time: 10:00am
Location: Grizedale Forest Campsite
Format: Solo / Pairs Relay /Team Relay (3, 4 or 5)
Course: A scenic, technical, 7km forest loop
Cut-off: Final lap must be started by 6:00pm

Saturday’s race kicks off the weekend with an 8 hour ultra format designed to test both individual endurance and team strategy. Runners complete as many 7km loops as possible within the allotted time, tackling undulating trails, woodland singletrack and the signature Grizedale terrain.

Competitors may run solo, in pairs relay, or as part of a team relay, with teams choosing their own rotation strategy to cover the distance. With a generous eight-hour window, tactical pacing and teamwork will play a pivotal role in topping the leaderboards.

Day 2 – Sunday: The Grizedale 22km Trail Race

Start Time: 09:00am
Location: Grizedale Forest Campsite
Format: 11km loop Individual best effort (Pairs and Team times are combined)
Course: A scenic, technical, 11km forest loop
Cut-off: The 2nd lap must be started by 11:00am

On Sunday, athletes head back into the forest for a challenging 22km trail race, run as individuals. But the twist comes in the scoring: Individual times are combined to create a total pair time and each team member’s time is added to form the team’s overall finishing time.

Podium places and prizes will be awarded based on these combined results, ensuring that teamwork and collective performance remain at the heart of the Ultra-Trail Grizedale weekend.

A Weekend for All Levels of Trail Runner

From hardened ultra-athletes looking for their next challenge to adventurous trail runners keen to test themselves over a weekend of immersive woodland racing, Ultra-Trail Grizedale offers something truly unique. The combination of individual grit, team dynamics and multi-day racing makes the event unlike anything else in the UK trail running calendar.

Set deep in the Lake District National Park, the event provides runners and spectators with an unforgettable atmosphere, natural beauty at every turn and a festival-style weekend experience.
