free mountain bike guiding on
Lake district trails
Saturday - 8th June 2024
Lakota-Expeditions are offering a day of free mountain bike guiding. Whether you're visiting the Lakes for the day or you're a local activist, if you fancy spending the day being guided around the very best trails in the Lake District, then read on...
saturday 8th june
enjoyable day ride + coffee stops + great views
We'll meet at 09:30 am, in the car park by the car / passenger ferry at Windermere (GR 400960). From there we'll cycle the short distance to the lake shore and catch the ferry across to the trails leading to Wray Castle, Claife Heights, Grizedale, Parkamoor... and beyond. We'll spend most of the day exploring glorious singletrack, forest gravel and quiet lanes, stopping to refuel along the way. You'll need your own mountain bike or robust gravel bike, a packed lunch, snacks, water, suitable clothing, basic bike tools and a puncture repair kit. None of the trails we'll be riding are particularly gnarly. This is a mellow day ride, aimed at those keen to explore the lakes at a relaxed pace. We'll aim to be back at the car park for around 4:00 pm.
Q&A
Is the day of guiding free?
There's no charge for the brilliant, friendly, expert guiding - that's on us! You will need to pay for the ferry (£2 each way - card only) and we'll stop at least once for a coffee / icecream. Plan to bring snacks or a packed lunch for our lunch time break.
What do I need to bring?
You'll need your own bike suitable for forest trails and non-technical singletrack. There's a bit of road too, so lights and high vis clothing is recommended. Please bring and wear a helmet. You'll also need: food, water, spare clothes and basic bike tools to include a puncture repair kit, pump, multi-tool etc.
Where do we meet?
We'll meet in the car park, just up from the car ferry located on the east side of Windermere - GR 400960. Directions are shown below. If you aim to get to the car park as close to 9:00 am as possible, this will allow us all a bit of time to faff. We'll aim to start the ride at 09:30.

How technical will the riding be?
You'll need to be confident to ride on varied terrain for most the day. There are no big drops, jumps or epic carries and we're in no majot rush. The day will be spent on mainly rideable terrain, at a modest pace so we can chat and take in the views.
Can I bring children?
Since our group size is limited to 8, please bring just the one and they must be 16 years or over and be capable of riding for most of the day on off-road terrain.
Can I bring my dog?
Unfortunately not. The nature of the routes we'll be following and the fact that we'll be travelling in a group, often along narrow paths and tracks, means that dogs could impact on safety.
What happens if the weather is rubbish?
Yes, the great British weather; it can be fickle! The reality is that we're all used to having one eye on the weather and moving to plan B. So, we'll contact you and share our thoughts if the weather is looking rowdy. We'll aim to push on, unless it's due to rain heavily for most of the day. So, be prepared for those summer showers and pack waterproofs and warm kit.
